Enzo Maresca Backs Phil Foden to Rediscover Best Form at Manchester City

Posted : 22 October 2026

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has insisted that helping Phil Foden rediscover his top form is one of his key responsibilities. The England international endured a lengthy goal drought before scoring against Ipswich Town at the weekend, followed by a superb hat-trick in City's 5-1 Champions League victory over AEK Athens.

Maresca believes the 26-year-old has the ability to re-establish himself among England's leading players after difficult seasons.

Maresca revealed that he had held several conversations with Foden since taking charge, with the aim of making the midfielder understand how important he remains to the team.

The City boss explained that improving individual players ultimately strengthens the entire squad, adding that he sees it as his responsibility to help Foden regain the level that made him one of the Premier League's standout performers in the 2023-24 season, when he scored 27 goals and collected major individual awards.

The Italian manager has enjoyed an impressive start to his tenure at the Etihad Stadium, with City showing strong form in domestic competition despite a Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

He acknowledged that replacing Pep Guardiola after a decade-long spell and integrating several new players would normally require time, but praised the squad's ability to compete while adapting to significant changes.

City now turn their attention to Saturday's Premier League clash against Aston Villa, with Erling Haaland expected to return after missing the European fixture because of a foot problem.

Haaland has made a prolific start to the campaign, while Matheus Nunes, Mateo Kovacic and Nico O'Reilly remain fitness concerns. Foden's resurgence gives Maresca another attacking option as City look to maintain their momentum.
