Nine-time champions, Enyimba International FC, delivered a resilient display in Port Harcourt to secure a valuable 1-1 draw against title-chasing Rivers United FC in Sunday’s Nigeria Premier Football League Match Day 27 clash at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.
In what was the first real away test for newly appointed Technical Adviser Emmanuel Deutsch Gustavo, the People’s Elephant showed renewed organisation and mental strength to earn a point against a technically balanced Rivers United side tutored by club legend Finidi George.
Cagey start, clinical finish
The encounter lived up to its blockbuster billing, with both teams displaying tactical caution in the early exchanges. Rivers United sought to impose themselves through their wide channels, while Enyimba maintained compact lines and quick transitions.
The breakthrough came in the 28th minute when Abiodun Joseph rose highest to expertly glance home a well-delivered free kick, momentarily silencing the Port Harcourt faithful and putting the visitors in front.
However, Rivers United responded with intent. Just two minutes before halftime, Aniekeme capitalised on sustained pressure to draw the hosts level in the 43rd minute, ensuring parity heading into the interval.
Tactical chess battle
The second half evolved into a strategic contest. Rivers United pushed for dominance, but Enyimba’s defensive structure held firm. Deutsch’s game plan focused on neutralising Rivers’ wing play and limiting space in the final third — a tactical adjustment that blunted much of the hosts’ attacking rhythm.
Despite late surges from the Pride of Rivers, Enyimba remained composed, demonstrating improved cohesion and discipline under their new handler.
Deutsch’s early statement
Speaking after the game, Deutsch expressed satisfaction with his players’ mentality and application.
“The boys showed good character in both halves. It’s still early days, but they proved they can compete. There are areas to improve, and with more training sessions, we’ll get better.”
The Cameroonian tactician also acknowledged the magnitude of leading Nigeria’s most decorated club, pledging commitment to restoring its proud legacy.
He further praised the backing of Chairman Nwankwo Kanu and Sporting Director Daniel Eke, noting their support has boosted confidence within the squad.
A point that feels like progress
While it was only a draw on paper, the result carries deeper significance. Securing a point away in Port Harcourt signals a potential turning point for Enyimba as they attempt to steady their campaign in the season’s second half.
Attention now shifts to Aba, where the People’s Elephant will host Kun Khalifat in what is shaping up to be a fiery Oriental derby at the Enyimba International Stadium.
If this performance is anything to go by, the rebuilding process under Deutsch may already be gathering momentum.
