Enugu Rangers Face MC Alger Test in CAF Champions League Clash

Posted : 23 October 2026

Enugu Rangers are bracing for a hostile atmosphere as they face MC Alger in the second leg of their CAF Champions League qualifier today. The Nigerian side holds a solid 2-0 advantage from the first leg played in Abeokuta. They arrived early in Algiers on Monday to acclimatize and focus fully on the task ahead.

Reports from Algeria indicated extreme pressure surrounding the fixture at the 40,000-capacity Ali La Pointe Stadium in Douéra. Tickets sold out in under an hour, highlighting local determination to overturn the deficit. Consequently, Enugu Rangers petitioned CAF to play the match behind closed doors due to safety concerns.

However, CAF dismissed the protest and confirmed that the match will proceed with a full stadium of passionate supporters. To manage potential security risks, CAF appointed Ugandan security expert Dixon Okello to oversee the game. Egypt's Hisham Salaheldin Mostafa serves as match commissioner, while Lesotho's David Molise takes charge as the referee.

Enugu Rangers General Manager Amobi Ezeaku dismissed worries about the intimidating environment. He emphasized that the outcome will be decided strictly by the players on the pitch. The team aims to maintain absolute focus despite the massive crowd noise expected.

MC Alger players held a crucial meeting aiming to secure a comeback victory by at least three goals. The hosts miss suspended defender Oussama Benhaoua and injured captain Ayoub Abdellaoui. However, they welcome back midfielder Mohamed Benkhemassa and forward Ben Ahmed Kohili to boost their squad.

History reminds both clubs of their famous 1976 semifinal meeting in the same competition. Enugu Rangers traveled to Algiers back then with a 2-0 lead but suffered a 3-0 defeat. Head coach Fidelis Ilechukwu insists that lightning will not strike twice in the same place.

Ilechukwu urged his players to remain disciplined and avoid defending too deep for the entire ninety minutes. The Flying Antelopes plan to balance strong defensive organization with sharp counter-attacks. Scoring an away goal will significantly increase pressure on the Algerian hosts.
