Enugu Rangers moved closer to the CAF Champions League group stage after defeating Algeria’s MC Alger 2-0 in the first leg of their second qualifying-round tie. The match took place at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Sunday, October 18, 2026.
The Flying Antelopes showed determination to secure the advantage despite playing with 10 men for most of the contest. They continued to press for a breakthrough before finding the net in the closing stages.
Super Eagles defender Kenneth Igboke opened the scoring in the 81st minute. He converted a penalty to give the Nigerian side a crucial lead after a difficult battle against their Algerian opponents.
James Eno added the second goal a few minutes later. His finish gave Rangers a two-goal advantage ahead of the return fixture in Algeria next weekend.
The result was particularly significant because Rangers had to overcome an early setback. Goalkeeper Lucky Jimoh received a straight red card in the 13th minute after fouling MC Alger forward Zakaria Naidji, leaving the Nigerian champions with 10 players for much of the match. The visitors also lost Oussama Benhaoua to a red card in the second half, restoring numerical balance.
Rangers, coached by Fidelis Ilechukwu, will now travel to Algeria for the return leg on Friday, October 23. They must protect their two-goal lead to secure a place in the Champions League group stage. The tie also carries historical significance, as MC Alger overturned a two-goal deficit against Rangers in the 1976 African Cup of Champions Clubs competition.
Elsewhere, El-Kanemi Warriors were held to a 2-2 draw by Morocco’s Raja Casablanca in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup qualifying tie in Ikenne. The Nigerian side took an early lead but needed a late equalizer after Raja moved ahead through goals from Shararah and Mathias.
El-Kanemi will travel to Morocco for the return fixture on October 23, knowing they must deliver another strong performance to remain in contention for the group stage.
