Enugu FA gives reasons for inconclusive finals between Rangers International FC/Coal City FC

Posted : 31 March 2024

The chairman of the Enugu State Football Association, Tony Ugwu, has faulted the weather conditions and the inability of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium management to provide floodlights for the Federations Cup Final between Rangers International and Coal City Football Club, which ended inconclusively.

While he regretted the situation, the state FA Chairman observed that the rules of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, stipulate that the game can be played either on Saturday or Sunday.

Ugwu added that the FA will wait for the match report of the finals before taking further steps on the situation.

"As you can see, the weather is bad, and the teams are complaining that they can’t see. Incidentally, the Stadium management couldn’t turn on the generator set to power the Stadium lights. At the end of the day, we thought we were going to conclude the game, but it’s a natural occurrence."

"I don’t think a professional team would be scared to play penalties, and you can’t play penalties in darkness. Mind you, penalties are part of the game."

"We will obtain the match report from the officials and inform the press about the way forward," Ugwu added.

Regarding the performance of both sides, he stated that he was satisfied, especially with the quality of play by both teams. He argued that both Rangers and Coal City FC are currently the best in the state, and it would be amazing to see them represent Enugu as the competition continues.

Rangers International were not willing to continue the game on penalties after full time ended 1-1.

Played at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, the final of the Enugu state Federations cup lived up to its hype.

It was a closely contested encounter between both sides, who represent the state in the Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL (Rangers), and the Nigeria National League, NNL, (Coal City).
