England, Spain Set for Euro 2025 Final Rematch

Posted : 24 July 2025

Two years after their heartbreaking loss in the 2023 Women’s World Cup final, England’s Lionesses have earned a shot at redemption. Spain’s extra-time victory over Germany has set up a thrilling Euro 2025 final clash with England this Sunday—a repeat of their 2023 World Cup encounter that ended in Spanish triumph.

Back then, both teams were regarded as the best in the world, and little has changed. They remain the top two sides in Europe, now poised for another unforgettable showdown. Former England striker Ellen White, a key figure in England’s Euro 2022 triumph, shared her excitement, calling it a match where either side could come out on top. “It’s a one-off game… On England’s day they can beat anyone, on Spain’s day they can beat anyone,” White said.

While Spain aim to complete a treble of major trophies—having added the Nations League title in 2024—England are determined to defend their European championship and add another title to their growing legacy. Former Lionesses captain Steph Houghton is confident in England’s chances: “With the squad we have, there’s no reason we can’t beat Spain.”

Looking Back: Pain of the Past and Promise of the Present

In 2023, England entered the World Cup final with high hopes, eager to add another title to their Euro 2022 success. But it was Spain who delivered the decisive blow. A first-half goal from captain Olga Carmona, following a costly midfield error from Lucy Bronze, sealed a 1-0 win in Sydney and crushed England's dream of lifting a World Cup trophy.

However, Sunday's final might tell a different story. England defeated Spain at Wembley in February, becoming the last team to do so, although Spain claimed victory in their latest meeting on 3 June. Historically, England have held their own in this fixture, losing just five of 19 competitive matches.

Former England midfielder Fara Williams believes the Lionesses won't see themselves as underdogs this time. “They’re the European champions. Spain may have won the World Cup, but this is England’s trophy to defend.”

Houghton agrees that the past won’t weigh on the current squad, highlighting the fresh faces and new energy in the team. “It’s a fresh slate,” she told BBC Radio 5 Live. “There are a lot of new players.”

What’s Changed Since 2023?

Despite the familiar faces, England’s squad has undergone significant changes in the last year. Seven players who started in the World Cup final were also part of the lineup that defeated Italy in the semi-final. But a series of recent retirements and absences have reshaped the team.

Goalkeeper Mary Earps announced her retirement just before the tournament, followed by midfielder Fran Kirby. Millie Bright also made herself unavailable, forcing head coach Sarina Wiegman to adapt quickly. The squad now includes exciting new talent, such as rising star Michelle Agyemang, who earned her first cap only this year.

Williams noted that this newer England side carries more pressure. “They’re expected to grow the game and succeed at the same time. In 2022, they played freely. Now, expectations are higher than ever.”

Spain’s Steady Evolution

Spain, while largely unchanged in structure, are now guided by Montse Tomé, who previously served as assistant to former coach Jorge Vilda. The tactical philosophy remains similar, but Tomé has made her own mark.

Aitana Bonmatí, the reigning Ballon d'Or Féminin winner and semi-final hero, continues to shine despite having battled viral meningitis before the tournament. Two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas has also returned to a key starting role. Esther González, previously unused in 2023, has emerged as a Golden Boot contender at Euro 2025.

However, Jenni Hermoso, a pivotal figure in the 2023 World Cup, is absent. Her name made headlines after former Spanish football federation president Luis Rubiales kissed her without consent during the World Cup medal ceremony—a move that led to his sexual assault conviction earlier this year.

As both teams prepare for another historic meeting, Sunday’s Euro 2025 final promises high drama, emotional stakes, and elite football. For England, it’s a shot at redemption. For Spain, it’s a chance to assert their dominance once again.
