England’s Attack Impresses in 4-2 Win Over Croatia but Defensive Issues Raise Concerns

Posted : 22 June 2026

England began their World Cup campaign in exciting fashion, producing an impressive attacking display to defeat Croatia 4-2 in Arlington, Texas. Despite twice being pegged back in the first half, Thomas Tuchel’s side responded strongly after the break to secure a convincing opening victory.

While the result showcased England’s offensive quality, concerns remain over their defensive stability. The team, which kept a perfect record in qualifying without conceding, showed vulnerabilities that could be exploited by stronger opponents later in the tournament, including sides like France, Spain, and Argentina.

Attention now turns to their next Group L fixture against Ghana in Boston. A win, combined with Panama failing to beat Croatia, would secure England’s place in the last 32 as group winners. However, questions persist over the balance and experience within their defensive unit.

Tuchel’s squad selection has drawn scrutiny, particularly the omission of experienced defenders such as Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luke Shaw, and Harry Maguire. Injuries have also disrupted preparations, with Tino Livramento ruled out before the tournament began, forcing Trevoh Chalobah into a squad role despite limited international experience.

The defensive line-up used against Croatia featured several players making their World Cup debuts, highlighting the overall lack of experience across the backline. This has fueled debate over potential changes, including whether Marc Guehi should replace Ezri Konsa in central defence.

Despite criticism, striker Ollie Watkins defended the team’s backline, insisting that England’s defenders have proven quality at the highest level and improved significantly after settling early nerves in their opening match.
