Emmanuel Fernandez Faces Rangers Pressure After McInnes' Defensive Warning

Emmanuel Fernandez is facing increased competition for his place in the Rangers starting lineup after concerns over his defensive displays during the club's pre-season preparations ahead of the 2026/27 Scottish Premiership campaign.

The Super Eagles defender enjoyed an outstanding debut season at Ibrox. He won Rangers' Player of the Year award and earned his first senior Nigeria call-up after establishing himself as one of the club's most consistent performers. His form also attracted reported interest from top European clubs, including Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund.

Despite that impressive breakthrough campaign, Fernandez is now under pressure following the arrival of new Rangers manager Derek McInnes, who is demanding greater defensive discipline from his squad after last season's disappointing finish.

Scottish journalist Scott McDermott believes the 25-year-old risks frustrating McInnes if he continues making unnecessary mistakes while playing out from the back. According to McDermott, Fernandez's tendency to attempt risky horizontal passes in dangerous areas has become a concern during Rangers' pre-season matches against Saint-Etienne and West Ham United.

While Fernandez remains highly regarded for his strength, composure and ability on the ball, McDermott suggested McInnes expects his defenders to prioritise simplicity and defensive solidity when under pressure.

The Rangers boss has already challenged Fernandez to build on his excellent first season and produce more consistent performances. McInnes recently praised the Nigerian defender's potential but stressed that talented young players must continue improving to help Rangers compete for major honours.

Competition in central defence has also increased following the signing of South African defender Olwethu Makhanya, who was recruited to strengthen Rangers' backline before the new campaign. His arrival gives McInnes greater selection options as he attempts to rebuild a defence that struggled badly during the closing weeks of last season.

Fernandez is expected to feature when Rangers begin their Scottish Premiership season against Dundee United. The opening fixture could prove important as McInnes assesses his preferred defensive partnership ahead of a demanding campaign. Rangers are targeting a stronger league challenge after finishing third last season under previous management.

The Nigerian defender remains one of Rangers' most gifted centre-backs, but maintaining concentration throughout matches will be crucial if he is to retain his place in the starting XI. Another series of avoidable defensive lapses could open the door for Makhanya to claim a regular role, increasing the competition Fernandez faces despite his impressive achievements during his first year in Scotland.
