Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has revealed that he expects to return to action in a few weeks after undergoing an operation following his side's 2-0 Premier League victory over Everton on Saturday, October 17, 2026.
The 34-year-old Argentina international suffered an injury in the second half after colliding with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite. He received treatment on the pitch for approximately eight minutes before being carried off on a stretcher and taken to hospital.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso confirmed that Martinez had suffered a concussion following the incident. The goalkeeper later provided a positive update on social media, thanking supporters for their messages and confirming that his operation had gone well.
"Thanks to everyone for the messages. The operation went well," Martinez wrote. "The most important thing is that we won, and kept a clean sheet. In a few weeks we'll be back."
Chelsea now face a difficult run of fixtures without their first-choice goalkeeper. The Blues are scheduled to meet Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United in the Premier League, with a Carabao Cup tie against Liverpool in between.
Mike Penders is expected to deputise during Martinez's recovery. The 21-year-old Belgian joined Chelsea from Genk in 2024 for a reported £17 million and made his Premier League debut when he replaced Martinez against Everton.
Alonso expressed confidence in the young goalkeeper, praising his personality, bravery and readiness to step into the first team.
"Mike has personality. He's brave and we have full trust with him. He did well when he came on," the Chelsea manager said.
Penders helped Chelsea preserve their clean sheet, their first in the Premier League since January. Pedro Neto scored both goals in the 2-0 victory, which also ended Everton's unbeaten league run.
Martinez's absence will be a concern for Chelsea as they prepare for a demanding stretch of matches. However, his positive update has offered encouragement to supporters, with the goalkeeper expressing confidence that he will return within weeks.
