Ivory Coast head coach Emerse Fae has expressed confidence ahead of his side’s crucial Group E showdown with Germany, insisting the Elephants will not be intimidated by one of world football’s traditional powerhouses when they meet at BMO Field in Toronto on Saturday.
The West Africans enter the contest in excellent form after opening their World Cup campaign with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Ecuador. A late strike from Amad Diallo secured all three points and gave Ivory Coast only their second opening-match win in four World Cup appearances.
Although the scoreline was narrow, Ivory Coast showed resilience throughout the encounter. Ecuador created several dangerous opportunities and struck the woodwork three times, but Fae’s team remained disciplined before finding the decisive breakthrough in the closing moments.
The victory extended Ivory Coast’s impressive run of results in 2026. Since their elimination from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations by Egypt, the Elephants have responded strongly, recording four consecutive wins. Preparations for the World Cup included notable victories over South Korea, Scotland, and France, further boosting confidence within the squad.
Germany, however, present a significantly tougher challenge. Germany made a powerful statement in their opening match by dismantling Curacao 7-1, producing one of the most dominant performances of the tournament so far.
The Germans saw six different players find the net, with Kai Havertz scoring twice. Additional goals came from Felix Nmecha, Nico Schlotterbeck, Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown and Deniz Undav as Julian Nagelsmann’s side showcased their attacking depth.
Germany’s victory over Curacao continued an unbeaten run throughout 2026, with previous wins against Switzerland, Ghana, Finland and the United States reinforcing their status as one of the leading contenders for the title.
Despite acknowledging Germany’s pedigree and wealth of experience, Fae believes his players have enough quality to compete. The Ivorian coach praised the Germans’ achievements and the strength of their squad but stressed that his team will approach the match with the objective of securing qualification for the knockout stages.
Fae emphasized that Ivory Coast must trust in their own strengths and play with courage, stating that his players are ready to go “eyeball-to-eyeball” with Germany in pursuit of another major result.
One player expected to play a key role for Germany is Florian Wirtz. Although the attacking midfielder experienced a challenging debut season with Liverpool FC after his high-profile move from Bayer Leverkusen, he remains a vital figure for the national team. Wirtz has contributed goals and assists consistently under Nagelsmann and provided an assist in Germany’s opening World Cup match.
For Ivory Coast, much attention will be focused on rising star Yan Diomande. The 19-year-old winger impressed against Ecuador with an energetic and influential display, regularly driving forward, creating attacking opportunities and causing problems for defenders throughout the match.
With both teams entering the fixture in strong form, the encounter promises to be one of the standout matches of the group stage. A victory for either side would move them significantly closer to securing a place in the knockout rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
