Emerse Faé Faces Severe Backlash Following Ivory Coast World Cup Knockout Against Norway

Posted : 01 July 2026

Ivory Coast head coach Emerse Faé faces intense criticism following his team's painful exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Elephants suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat against Norway in a thrilling Round of 32 clash in Dallas, Texas. This disappointing result brought an end to a historic tournament run for the West African nation.

The tactical choices made by the Ivorian manager have quickly become the center of heated national debates. Fans and local sports journalists are openly questioning his final squad selection for the global tournament. The primary source of anger stems from the controversial omission of star striker Sébastien Haller.

Haller famously scored the decisive winning goal during the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations final. Many analysts feel his extensive tournament experience was desperately needed in the closing stages against Norway. Instead, Faé consistently handed starting roles to Inter Milan forward Ange-Yoan Bonny during the tournament.

The pressure intensified after unverified allegations began circulating heavily across Ivorian social media networks. These rumors claim that the coach's wife operates actively as a professional football agent. Critics suggest this personal connection directly influenced the continuous inclusion of Bonny in the starting lineup.

No concrete evidence has been provided by anyone to support these damaging claims. Neither the Ivorian Football Federation nor Faé has released an official public statement regarding the matter. The silence from the football house has only fueled further media speculation across the country.

During the match, Antonio Nusa opened the scoring for Norway with a spectacular curling effort before halftime. The African team responded brilliantly after the interval when substitute Amad Diallo grabbed a fine equalizer. However, Manchester City striker Erling Haaland struck a decisive blow in the 86th minute to seal the victory.

Faé later defended his young players during his post-match press conference in Texas. He stated that a general lack of top-level maturity ultimately cost his team the match. He noted that the squad failed to manage the game properly after drawing level late in the second half.

The manager suggested that a more experienced side would have focused entirely on reaching extra time. He admitted that elite European teams punish the slightest defensive mistakes instantly on the world stage. Despite the painful exit, this campaign marked the first time Ivory Coast ever reached the World Cup knockout rounds.

Norway now advances to the Round of 16 where they will face South American giants Brazil. Meanwhile, the Ivorian technical crew must return home to address the growing unrest within the national camp. The federation will evaluate the coach's overall performance as they look toward future continental qualifiers.
