Nottingham Forest moved a step closer to securing their Premier League status after Elliot Anderson scored a dramatic late equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Newcastle United on Sunday. The midfielder struck against his former club in the closing stages to earn Forest a valuable point in their fight to avoid relegation.
Newcastle appeared on course for victory after Harvey Barnes broke the deadlock in the 74th minute. However, the visitors were once again punished for failing to hold onto a lead, with Anderson finding the net in the 88th minute to rescue a draw for Forest.
The result leaves Nottingham Forest in 15th place with 43 points, putting them in a much safer position heading into the final stretch of the campaign. Their survival could also be confirmed if West Ham United fail to get a positive result against Arsenal later on Sunday.
Speaking after the match, Anderson highlighted the importance of collecting points during the closing weeks of the season. He admitted Forest were not at their best but praised the team’s determination to avoid defeat and secure a crucial result.
Forest entered the season with high expectations after finishing seventh last term and earning European qualification. However, the campaign has been filled with challenges, including several managerial changes and a prolonged relegation battle. Under current manager Vitor Pereira, the club has managed to steady itself and move closer to safety.
Anderson credited Pereira for helping turn the team’s fortunes around and praised the unity within the squad despite a difficult season. He also acknowledged the disappointment of Forest’s recent 4-0 Europa League semi-final defeat to Aston Villa but insisted the players remain focused on ending the league season strongly.
The midfielder emphasized the fighting spirit within the squad, noting that despite working under four different managers during the campaign, the players have continued to support one another and battle together in difficult circumstances.
