Elegbeleye Backs VAR Initiative, NPFL in Search of Sponsors for Rollout

The Chairman of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, has thrown his full support behind the introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology into the Nigerian topflight, as the league body intensifies efforts to secure sponsorship for the groundbreaking initiative.

Speaking recently, Elegbeleye affirmed that the next phase of development in Nigerian football involves embracing technological innovation to enhance officiating accuracy and boost credibility.

“The next level now is that we want to advance to the level of having a VAR here,” he said. “We are actively looking for sponsors to help acquire the VAR machines. We’re ready to embrace VAR, but the technology is expensive, and we also need to train those who will operate it.”

According to the NPFL boss, significant steps have already been taken toward the implementation of the system. Notably, 10 computer-literate Nigerian referees have been shortlisted by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for training in Morocco, one of Africa’s leading hubs for VAR deployment.

Elegbeleye added that the league body has held virtual meetings with VAR manufacturers and technology providers to understand the operational framework and requirements.

“Before using the system, referees must be proficient with communication gadgets. It’s not just about looking at the screen; constant communication with the VAR operators behind the scenes is key,” he explained.

The push for VAR comes amid increased scrutiny on officiating in the NPFL, with fans and stakeholders calling for more transparency and fairness in match decisions. If successful, Nigeria will join a select group of African leagues that have adopted VAR, marking a major stride in the modernization of domestic football.
