2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 38: El-Kanemi Warriors survive relegation scare with slim win over lower-league-bound Sunshine

With their campaign in the elite league already over, Sunshine Stars FC of Akure were determined not to go down without a fight, as they held firm with a defensive display in the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 38 fixture played in Maiduguri against relegation-threatened El-Kanemi Warriors.


With four teams in the relegation zone on the final day of the season — including El-Kanemi Warriors — the permutations were tough, and uncertainty loomed over which team would ultimately be relegated.


With the threat of relegation on their minds, the home side, Desert Warriors, put up a spirited fight against the Owena Whales.


At the end of the encounter, El-Kanemi Warriors secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Sunshine Stars at the El-Kanemi Stadium, courtesy of a dramatic goal scored in the 90+24th minute, steering clear of relegation.


This vital win saw El-Kanemi Warriors finish the season in 16th place with 49 points, just one point ahead of relegated Heartland FC.
