Egypt secured their first-ever World Cup win on Sunday with a 3-1 comeback victory over New Zealand in Vancouver. The result strengthens their position in Group G and moves them closer to a place in the knockout stage.
New Zealand took an early lead through Finn Surman’s 15th-minute header, but Egypt responded through Mostafa Zico, who equalised with a well-placed header from Mohamed Hany’s cross.
Mohamed Salah then inspired the turnaround in the second half, combining with Zico before curling home a superb left-footed finish in the 67th minute. He later set up substitute Trezeguet, who sealed the win with a close-range header.
Speaking after the match, Salah described the victory as a historic achievement, praising the passionate Egyptian support in the stadium, which he said made the atmosphere feel like a home game.
The win takes Egypt to the top of Group G with four points, leaving them needing just a draw against Iran in their final group match in Seattle to progress to the last 32.
Belgium and Iran earlier played out a 0-0 draw, while Belgium are set to face New Zealand in their next fixture in Vancouver.
