2025/2026 NPFL Match Day 5 Review: Eguma Hails Enyimba’s Deserved 3-2 Win Over Insurance

Posted : 22 September 2025

Enyimba International FC’s Technical Adviser, Stanley Eguma, has described his side’s hard-fought 3-2 victory over Bendel Insurance in Match Day 5 of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) as a well-deserved result.

The visibly delighted coach dedicated the victory to Abia State Governor Alex Otti, who was present at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba, and to his late mother, who recently passed away.

The nine-time NPFL champions maintained their unbeaten run in the league after an action-packed five-goal thriller against the Benin Arsenals. Despite conceding early in the third minute when Chinedu Nwosu headed home from a corner, Enyimba struck back before halftime. Joseph Abiodun equalized with a well-placed header after Mohammed Hussani’s free-kick rebounded off the post.

Bendel Insurance restored their lead in the 59th minute when Wisdom Udoh reacted quickest after Enyimba goalkeeper Kelvin Ogunga parried a penalty. However, the People’s Elephant again responded, winning a spot kick that captain Kalu Nweke converted for his second goal in as many games.

The comeback was completed in the 69th minute when youngster Chidera Michael calmly slotted home the winner after a fine exchange of passes in attack.

Eguma praised his players for their character and maturity, noting that he anticipated a tough game given the historical rivalry between the two clubs.

“Insurance gave us a scare from the first three minutes, but my boys showed resilience by coming back twice and then taking the lead. The rivalry between these two traditional clubs has always been fierce, and today’s game proved it. I respect Insurance for their speed and professionalism, but we showed maturity and the Enyimba spirit of ‘never say die,’” Eguma said.

He further thanked Governor Otti for his support, stressing that the team would continue working hard to maintain their form.

Bendel Insurance coach Greg Ikhanoba admitted his side’s lack of concentration cost them the match.

“Enyimba are one of the best teams in Nigeria and Africa. We lost focus at key moments, and they punished us. We will learn from this and correct our mistakes before our next fixture,” Ikhanoba said.

With the win, Enyimba remain top of the NPFL table on 11 points. They next face Ikorodu City FC away in Lagos on Match Day 6.
