Eguavoen Takes Charge of Super Falcons for October Olympic Qualifiers

Former Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen has been appointed interim coach of the Super Falcons ahead of their 2028 Olympic Games qualifying tie against Comoros. The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed the appointment as it continues its search for a substantive head coach for the senior women's national team.

Eguavoen, popularly known as Cerezo, brings extensive international coaching experience to the temporary assignment. He previously guided the Super Eagles to a bronze-medal finish at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

The appointment comes after the NFF parted ways with Justin Madugu and his technical crew following Nigeria's disappointing 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations campaign. The federation is yet to appoint a permanent successor, leaving Eguavoen to oversee the Falcons during a crucial stage of their Olympic qualification campaign.

This will be Eguavoen's first managerial assignment with a senior women's national team. The 61-year-old has, however, held several coaching and technical roles within Nigerian football and currently serves as the NFF's technical director.

Eguavoen will have a team of experienced coaches around him. Christopher Danjuma, head coach of Nasarawa Amazons, will serve as an assistant, while former Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer Olatunji Baruwa will work with the goalkeepers. Former Super Falcons defender and coach Ayisat Yusuf will also join the technical crew as an assistant coach.

Nigeria will begin their Olympic qualifying campaign in the second round against Comoros. Both legs will take place at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo, with the first match scheduled for October 9 and the return leg on October 13, 2026.

The Super Falcons received a bye into the second round because they were among the three highest-ranked teams in the qualifying competition. Comoros reached this stage after defeating Sudan 30-0 on aggregate.

Nigeria must progress through four rounds of two-legged ties to secure one of Africa's two places at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. If the Falcons eliminate Comoros, they will face either the Democratic Republic of Congo or Morocco in the third round between February 23 and March 6, 2027.

The assignment gives Eguavoen an immediate challenge with little preparation time. Nigeria's status as one of Africa's most successful women's teams will also increase the pressure on the interim coach to deliver against Comoros.

The NFF's decision provides temporary stability while the federation works to appoint a permanent coach. Eguavoen's results in October could therefore become an important part of the conversation surrounding the Super Falcons' next coaching appointment.
