Edo Queens Thrash AS GNN 7-0 to Open WAFU-B Champions League Qualifiers

Edo Queens made a stunning start to their 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU-B qualifying campaign by defeating AS Garde Nationale of Niger 7-0 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The Nigerian champions produced a dominant attacking display in their Group B opener and immediately strengthened their bid for another continental qualification.

Chioma Moses opened the scoring in the fifth minute before doubling the advantage from the penalty spot in first-half stoppage time. Edo Queens therefore entered the interval with a comfortable 2-0 lead after controlling much of the contest.

The Nigerian side continued their assault after the restart. Atume Doosuur scored two minutes into the second half before completing her brace in the 56th minute, while Aminat Folorunsho added the fifth goal six minutes later.

Moses completed her hat-trick in the 76th minute to further underline her influence. Oluwakemi Adegbuyi then completed the rout by scoring Edo Queens' seventh goal in the third minute of stoppage time.

Moses was named Woman of the Match after her three-goal performance. Her display, combined with Doosuur's brace, gave Edo Queens an emphatic opening result and demonstrated the attacking depth available to the reigning Nigerian champions.

The result also backed up the confidence expressed by assistant coach Gabriel Benson before the match. Benson had said the players were ready for the challenge and wanted to win their opening game as part of their wider ambition to claim the WAFU-B trophy.

Edo Queens entered the competition as the reigning Nigeria Women’s Football League champions after winning the 2025/26 NWFL Premiership title. They also have previous WAFU-B success, having won the regional qualifiers in 2024 before finishing fourth at the CAF Women’s Champions League that year.

The Nigerian champions are competing in Group B alongside AS GNN, ASEC Mimosas of Côte d’Ivoire and Ghanaian champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies. Their next group match is against ASEC Mimosas on August 27, before they face Ampem Darkoa on August 30.

The 7-0 victory gives Edo Queens an early advantage in the race for the knockout places. Their remaining matches will provide tougher tests, but the emphatic opening performance has immediately positioned the Nigerian champions as serious contenders for the WAFU-B title and a place in the CAF Women’s Champions League.
