Edo Queens Set Sights on WAFU-B Glory, CAF Women’s Champions League Ticket

Nigeria’s representatives, Edo Queens, have set their sights on another WAFU-B CAF Women’s Champions League triumph, with Edo State Sports Commission Chairman Amadin Desmond Enabulele expressing confidence that the Nigerian champions can go all the way in Burkina Faso.

Enabulele spoke ahead of the Queens’ crucial Group B encounter against Ghanaian champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies, a fixture that could prove decisive in determining the teams’ progression to the knockout stage.

The Nigerian side have made a blistering start to the competition, scoring 10 goals in two matches without suffering a defeat.

Edo Queens began their campaign with a commanding 7-0 victory over AS Garde Nationale of Niger Republic before defeating Côte d’Ivoire’s ASEC Mimosas 3-1.

Enabulele said the impressive performances were the product of careful planning and preparation rather than coincidence.

“Edo Queens know why they are here. They are here to win. They are intentional and focused, and they know exactly what they have come to do,” he said.

According to him, the team underwent a 30-day closed-camping programme before departing for Ouagadougou, with the backing of Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo providing the necessary support for the campaign.

He also attributed the team’s progress to the restructuring of Edo State’s football system, which, he said, had brought stability and competent technical personnel into the various teams.

The substantive head coach of Edo Queens, Moses Aduku, is currently away with Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national team at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.

However, Enabulele said the technical structure established at the club had ensured continuity, with Bendel Insurance Technical Adviser Kennedy Boboye temporarily overseeing the team.

“We brought in good hands in terms of the coaches and their assistants. That is exactly what we are seeing today. Even when the head coach is not there, the assistants are there to lead the team,” he said.

The commission chairman also commended Edo Queens Chairman Emperor Jarrett Tenebe for travelling to Burkina Faso to support the team, describing his presence and contributions as a major morale booster.

Enabulele said Tenebe had provided financial, moral and physical support throughout the campaign.

As the Queens prepare for their encounter with Ampem Darkoa, he acknowledged the quality of the Ghanaian side but noted that Edo Queens are familiar with their opponents, having faced them in 2024.

“We played Ampem Darkoa before in 2024. They are a team we know very well,” he said.

Enabulele expressed satisfaction with Edo Queens’ attacking display but insisted that the players must remain focused and avoid complacency.

He said the team’s target was to win every match rather than settle for a satisfactory performance.

“We agreed with the team that four out of five is not a pass mark. For us to leave here happy, it has to be five out of five,” he declared.

The Edo champions are also hoping to improve on their previous continental performance.

After winning the WAFU-B title in 2024, Edo Queens finished fourth at the CAF Women’s Champions League.

Enabulele said the experience had strengthened the team’s ambition, adding that the ultimate target was now to conquer Africa.

“This time around, we want to break that record. We want to win the CAF,” he said.

He, however, acknowledged that the immediate task was to secure the WAFU-B title and qualify for the CAF Women’s Champions League.

“We know that we have to win the WAFU-B first before going to CAF. We are very, very confident. We know why we are here, and we are going to win all our matches,” he said.

With the decisive clash against Ampem Darkoa looming, Enabulele urged Edo residents and Nigerian football supporters to continue backing the team.

“I want to assure you that we will come back to Nigeria with the cup,” he said.
