Edo Queens seek redemption against USFA in WAFU-B CAFWCL semi-final

Reigning Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) champions Edo Queens FC will be banking on their resilience and attacking strength when they confront USFA FC of Burkina Faso in the semi-finals of the WAFU-B CAF Women’s Champions League qualifying tournament on Wednesday in Ouagadougou.

The crucial encounter is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Stade 4 AOUT Stadium, with a place in the final and a major step towards securing qualification for the CAF Women’s Champions League proper at stake.

Edo Queens reached the knockout stage after making a blistering start to their Group B campaign, dismantling AS Garde Nationale of Niger Republic 7-0 before overcoming ASEC Mimosas of Côte d’Ivoire 3-1.

However, their momentum suffered a setback in their final group match when they narrowly lost 2-1 to Ghanaian side Ampem Darkoa Ladies on Sunday.

The defeat saw Ampem Darkoa finish top of Group B with nine points, while Edo Queens settled for second place on six points, with both sides advancing to the semi-finals.

Despite the setback, Edo Queens remain the tournament’s highest-scoring side, an indication of the attacking threat they possess heading into the decisive encounter against their Burkinabe opponents.

The Nigerian champions will therefore be looking to their attacking stars, including Chioma Moses, Atume Doosuur, and Esther Inyang, to reproduce the cutting edge that powered them through their opening two matches.

For interim coach Kennedy Boboye, the defeat to Ampem Darkoa is now firmly in the past, with his focus squarely on producing a strong response against USFA.

Boboye said the players had recovered mentally from the setback and were determined to fight for a place in the final.

He acknowledged the advantage USFA could derive from playing before their home supporters but insisted that Edo Queens were prepared for the atmosphere and the intensity of the encounter.

The coach expressed confidence that his players were physically, mentally, and psychologically ready to give their opponents a tough challenge.

With the stakes significantly higher, Edo Queens will need to combine their proven attacking firepower with greater defensive discipline if they are to overcome USFA and keep alive their ambition of representing West Africa at the CAF Women’s Champions League proper.

Victory would send the Nigerian champions into the final and leave them just one decisive hurdle away from achieving their continental objective.
