Edo Queens reclaim WAFU-B crown after dramatic victory over Ampem Darkoa

Edo Queens Football Club have reclaimed the WAFU-B Women’s Champions League qualifying title after defeating Ghanaian champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies FC 4-1 on penalties following a thrilling 2-2 draw in regulation time in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, on Saturday night.

The victory handed the Nigerian champions their second WAFU-B title and, more importantly, secured their qualification for the CAF Women’s Champions League proper.

Edo Queens were forced to dig deep in a fiercely contested final after twice coming from behind against an Ampem Darkoa side that had remained unbeaten throughout the competition before the dramatic encounter.

Doosuur Anastasia Atume gave Edo Queens an early advantage with a fourth-minute strike, but Beline Nyarkoh restored parity in the second minute before completing her brace in the 74th minute to put the Ghanaian champions ahead.

With defeat staring them in the face, Edo Queens produced a late response as Oluebube Umejiaku struck in the fourth minute of added time to level the scores at 2-2 and force the final into a penalty shootout.

The Nigerian side held their nerve from the spot, converting their chances to secure a commanding 4-1 shootout victory and lift the trophy.

The triumph also represented a measure of redemption for Edo Queens, who had suffered their only defeat of the tournament against Ampem Darkoa in their final Group B encounter. The Ghanaian champions had prevailed 2-1 in that meeting to finish top of the group ahead of the Nigerian representatives.

Edo Queens had earlier announced their intentions with an emphatic 5-1 demolition of Burkina Faso's USFA in the semi-finals, while Ampem Darkoa secured their place in the final with a 4-1 victory over Benin Republic's FC Dynamique.

The Nigerian champions previously won the WAFU-B title in 2024 before finishing fourth at the CAF Women’s Champions League finals in Morocco.

Their latest triumph therefore gives Edo Queens another opportunity to improve on that continental performance as they return to the CAF Women’s Champions League stage.

For Ampem Darkoa, the defeat ended an impressive unbeaten run, while Edo Queens' victory completed a remarkable turnaround from group-stage disappointment to regional champions.
