Edo Queens’ hopes of returning to the CAF Women’s Champions League ended in disappointment after they suffered a 3-2 aggregate defeat to Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa Ladies in the controversial replay of the 2026 WAFU-B Women’s Champions League final in Cairo, Egypt.
A 92nd-minute strike by Mohammed Afishata proved decisive, handing Ampem Darkoa victory after an additional 30 minutes of play and securing their qualification for the continental championship.
The outcome was particularly painful for the Nigerian champions, who had initially defeated their Ghanaian counterparts on penalties following a 2-2 draw in regulation time in the original final.
However, the decision to replay the encounter with an additional 30-minute period overturned Edo Queens’ earlier triumph and handed Ampem Darkoa the regional title.
The decision to stage the replay has generated criticism among football observers across the continent, with questions raised over the circumstances surrounding the additional playing period.
Despite the disappointing outcome, Edo Queens deserve credit for their determination and competitive display against the Ghanaian side, with the contest highlighting how narrowly they missed out on another continental appearance.
The defeat also means the Nigerian champions will miss the opportunity to feature at the CAF Women’s Champions League for the second time, following their maiden appearance in Morocco in 2024.
Edo Queens will now turn their attention to preparations for the new Nigeria Women Football League season, expected to commence next month, as they seek to recover from the continental setback.
For Ampem Darkoa, the victory secures a place in Group B of the CAF Women’s Champions League, where they will face Moroccan giants AS FAR, Uganda’s Kawempe Muslim Ladies, and Mali’s US FAS Bamako.
The 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League is scheduled to hold in Cairo, Egypt, from Nov. 1 to 15.
