Edo Queens March into WAFU-B Semi-Finals After ASEC Mimosas Win

Edo Queens have continued their impressive start to the 2026 WAFU-B CAF Women’s Champions League qualifying tournament in Burkina Faso, securing a place in the semi-finals with a 3-1 victory over ASEC Mimosas of Côte d’Ivoire.

The Nigerian champions produced another assured performance on Thursday to make it two wins from two matches in Group B and book their place in the knockout stage with a game still to play.

Oluwakemi Adegbuyi set Edo Queens on their way in the 23rd minute, finishing off an opportunity to give the Nigerian side an early advantage.

Doosuur Atume doubled the lead two minutes before half-time, sending Edo Queens into the break with a comfortable 2-0 cushion.

ASEC Mimosas returned from the interval with greater urgency and were rewarded when they pulled a goal back to reduce the deficit and put the Nigerians under pressure.

Edo Queens, however, refused to panic and continued to defend their advantage while looking for opportunities to restore their two-goal cushion.

Their patience paid off in the 89th minute when Oluebube Umajiaku found the back of the net to complete a 3-1 victory.

The result takes Edo Queens to six points from two matches, with 10 goals scored, following their emphatic 7-0 opening-day victory over AS Garde Nationale of Niger Republic.

The Nigerian champions will now face Ampem Darkoa Ladies of Ghana in their final Group B fixture, with the opportunity to finish the group stage at the summit.

Stand-in technical manager Kennedy Boboye praised the players for keeping their composure against a quality ASEC Mimosas side.

“I’m happy that our girls stood their ground. We played against a good side with quality today, but thank God we were able to take our chances when they came.

“Congratulations to our girls. They made us proud and we hope to achieve our purpose of coming to this tournament in Burkina Faso. We promised our people five over five before we left Benin City,” he said.

Boboye also expressed confidence in the team’s attacking strength, saying he was not surprised by the seven goals scored against AS Garde Nationale because Edo Queens have the capacity to produce big scoring performances whenever opportunities arise.

With the semi-final ticket already secured, Edo Queens will head into their final group game with confidence as they continue their pursuit of a place in the CAF Women’s Champions League proper.
