Edo Queens Lose 2-1 to Ampem Darkoa, Finish Second in WAFU-B Group

Posted : 31 August 2026

Edo Queens suffered their first defeat of the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU-B qualifiers after losing 2-1 to Ghanaian champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies on Sunday. The result saw Ampem Darkoa finish top of the group while Edo Queens advanced as runners-up.

The Nigerian champions entered the decisive fixture with two wins from two matches. They had opened the tournament with a 7-0 victory over Niger’s AS Garde Nationale before defeating ASEC Mimosas of Côte d’Ivoire 3-1.

Edo Queens made the stronger start against Ampem Darkoa and took the lead through Atume Doosuur in the 11th minute. The goal was her second of the tournament and gave the Nigerian champions a 1-0 advantage at the break.

Ampem Darkoa responded immediately after half-time. Rebecca Assemani restored parity early in the second half as the Ghanaian champions increased the pressure on the Nigerian defence.

The comeback was completed in the 78th minute when Milot Pokuaa struck from a direct free-kick. The Hasaacas Ladies loanee gave Ampem Darkoa the lead for the first time and the Ghanaian side held on to claim all three points.

The victory maintained Ampem Darkoa’s perfect record in the qualifying tournament. They finished the group stage with nine points, while Edo Queens remained on six points after their opening two victories.

Edo Queens can still reach the CAF Women’s Champions League despite the setback. Their earlier wins had already secured a place in the knockout stage before the final group match.

The defeat also ends Edo Queens’ perfect start but leaves the Nigerian champions with a strong attacking record. They scored 10 goals in their first two matches and will now need to recover quickly for the semi-final.

CAF’s official schedule lists the WAFU-B semi-finals for September 3 in Ouagadougou. The Group A winners will face the Group B runners-up, while the Group B winners will meet the Group A runners-up.

Ampem Darkoa will face hosts USFA in the last four, while Edo Queens will take on Dynamique FC de Calavi. The semi-finals will determine the two teams that will contest the WAFU-B final and fight for regional qualification to the CAF Women’s Champions League.
