Edo Queens Face Ampem Darkoa Again for Champions League Ticket

Posted : 29 October 2026

Edo Queens will seek to reaffirm their continental ambitions when they face Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa Ladies in a decisive 30-minute extra-time playoff to determine the WAFU-B representative at the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League.

The encounter, scheduled for Cairo, follows a controversial conclusion to the WAFU-B qualifying competition in Burkina Faso, where the Nigerian champions defeated Ampem Darkoa 4-1 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in regulation time.

Edo Queens were initially declared winners, but Ampem Darkoa subsequently petitioned the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over the officiating.

Following the protest, CAF ordered the two teams to play an additional 30 minutes to determine the regional representative at the continental competition, scheduled for Nov. 1 to 15 in Egypt.

The unusual arrangement presents both clubs with another opportunity to secure qualification, with the outcome set to determine the final occupant of Group B.

Edo Queens head coach Moses Aduku expressed confidence in his players ahead of the encounter, insisting that the team remained mentally prepared for the challenge.

"The players are in the right frame of mind," Aduku said.

The Nigerian side will be hoping to build on its performance in the original encounter, where it recovered from a fiercely contested 2-2 draw to triumph in the penalty shootout.

However, Ampem Darkoa will be equally determined to take advantage of the additional playing time and secure a place among Africa’s leading women’s clubs.

The winner will join Morocco’s AS FAR, Uganda’s Kawempe Muslim Ladies, and Mali’s US FAS Bamako in Group B of the CAF Women’s Champions League.

The competition will feature eight clubs battling for continental supremacy, providing the eventual WAFU-B representative with an opportunity to showcase its quality against some of Africa’s strongest sides.

For Edo Queens, qualification would offer another opportunity to strengthen Nigeria’s presence in women’s club football and pursue continental honours.

The stakes extend beyond the African competition, as the eventual Champions League winner will also earn a place in the qualifying round of the FIFA Women’s Champions Cup scheduled for the United States in 2027.

With only 30 minutes separating the two teams from a decisive outcome, Edo Queens and Ampem Darkoa face a high-pressure contest in which concentration, tactical discipline, and clinical finishing could determine who advances to Africa’s premier women’s club competition.
