Edo Queens clinch second NWFL Premiership crown after tense final-day stalemate

Posted : 15 June 2026

Edo Queens were crowned champions of the 2025/26 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership after holding Bayelsa Queens to a goalless draw in a tense Super Six finale at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt, on Sunday.

Going into the decisive encounter, Bayelsa Queens needed all three points to wrestle the title from their rivals, while Edo Queens required only a draw to secure the championship.

The Benin City side rose to the occasion, producing a disciplined and resilient display to frustrate Bayelsa Queens and seal their second NWFL Premiership title.

The closely contested match produced few clear-cut opportunities as both teams battled for supremacy, but Edo Queens successfully executed their game plan to finish the season at the summit.

The result saw Edo Queens end the Super Six playoffs with 10 points, two ahead of runners-up Bayelsa Queens, while Nasarawa Amazons finished third in the standings.

The triumph further strengthened Edo Queens' growing reputation in Nigerian women's football and completed another remarkable achievement for head coach Moses Aduku.

The experienced tactician became the first coach to win three NWFL Premiership titles within six seasons, having previously led Bayelsa Queens to glory in 2022 before guiding Edo Queens to championships in 2024 and 2026.

In other Matchday Five fixtures, Nasarawa Amazons and Rivers Angels played out a goalless draw, while FC Robo Queens fought back to earn a 1-1 draw against debutants Abia Angels.

Abia Angels concluded an impressive first-ever Super Six appearance with six points, while FC Robo Queens and Rivers Angels finished with four points each.

At the end of the competition, FC Robo Queens midfielder Oluwakemi Adegbuyi was named Player of the Season, while teammate Fatima Oloko claimed the Goalkeeper of the Season award.

The Golden Boot award was shared by Rivers Angels striker Abasiofon Uwah and Edo Queens forward Atume Doosuur after both players finished the campaign with 13 goals.

Rivers Angels also received the Fair Play Award for their exemplary conduct throughout the season.

As league champions, Edo Queens will represent Nigeria at the WAFU-B Women’s Champions League qualifiers scheduled to hold in Burkina Faso from August 13 to September 5.

The Benin-based club will aim to secure a place in the CAF Women’s Champions League and keep alive hopes of qualifying for the FIFA Women’s Club World Cup.

The season-ending ceremony attracted several notable dignitaries, including NFF board member Aisha Falode, former NFF board member Chris Green, Bayelsa State Deputy Governor Peter Akor, Bayelsa State Commissioner for Sports Daniel Igali, Edo State Sports Commission Chairman Desmond Enabulele, NFF Director of Competitions Ruth David and Bendel Insurance Chairman Jarrett Tenebe.

The successful conclusion of the Super Six playoffs highlighted the immense growth and competitive depth within Nigerian women's football. Edo Queens now shift their focus to continental representation, bearing the country's hopes on the international stage. Their disciplined campaign serves as a blueprint for success as they prepare for the challenging tasks ahead in Burkina Faso.
