Edo Queens Arrive in Burkina Faso for WAFU B Champions League Qualifiers

Posted : 21 August 2026

Nigeria Women’s Football League champions Edo Queens have arrived in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, ahead of the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU B qualifying tournament. The Nigerian champions departed Lagos on Thursday with 21 players and 12 officials after travelling through Lomé, Togo. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 23 to September 5.

Edo Queens will represent Nigeria after winning the 2025/26 NWFL Premiership title. They are also returning to the WAFU B stage after winning the regional competition in 2024 during their first appearance.

The Edo-based side has been placed in Group B, not Group A, alongside Ghanaian champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies, Côte d’Ivoire’s ASEC Mimosas and AS Garde Nationale of Niger. Group A contains hosts USFA of Burkina Faso, Dynamique FC of Benin and ASKO of Togo.

The group-stage matches will be played across three matchdays. The opening fixtures are scheduled for August 23 and 24, followed by the second round of matches on August 26 and 27, while the final group games are set for August 29 and 30.

Edo Queens have spent the past weeks preparing for the continental assignment. The champions played a two-leg Grade A friendly against FC Robo Queens in Benin City, with FC Robo winning the opening match 1-0 through Ajakaye Opeyemi’s 20th-minute goal. The friendly was part of the club’s programme to assess the squad before the trip to Burkina Faso.

The Nigerian champions will have to manage some squad disruption because several Edo Queens players have been involved with the Falconets. The club has also worked to strengthen its squad ahead of the regional campaign as it targets another successful continental run.

The team’s technical preparations have also faced a change in leadership. Head coach Moses Aduku is currently with Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national team, leaving Kennedy Boboye to provide technical leadership during the tournament, according to reports from the club’s camp.

The WAFU B qualifiers provide the pathway to the CAF Women’s Champions League. Edo Queens will need to navigate a demanding Group B before advancing towards the decisive stages and another opportunity to represent Nigeria on Africa’s biggest women’s club football platform.
