Edo Queens Accept CAF Ruling, Prepare for Decisive Replay in Cairo

Posted : 23 October 2026

Nigerian champions Edo Queens have accepted the decision of the Confederation of African Football regarding their disputed WAFU-B final against Ghana's Ampem Darkoa. The Benin City club confirmed they will settle the encounter on the pitch in Cairo. The team departs for Egypt on October 26 ahead of the deciding match scheduled for October 29.

The controversy began during the qualifying final in Burkina Faso back on September 5. Both teams played out a 2-2 draw in regulation time. Match officials incorrectly skipped the mandatory 30 minutes of extra time and moved directly to penalties. Edo Queens won the shootout 4-1 and were initially declared champions.

Ampem Darkoa lodged an official protest with CAF over the procedural error. The governing body's appeal board upheld the Ghanaian club's grievance and annulled the original shootout victory. CAF ordered both teams to resume the match from extra time with the score tied at 2-2.

Edo Queens consulted with the Edo State Government and the Nigeria Football Federation before accepting the verdict. Club management expressed disappointment over the outcome but stressed their commitment to securing qualification on the pitch. The winner of the replay earns a direct berth in the main tournament starting November 1.

"Our mission remains unchanged: to fight, to win and to secure our place in the CAF Women's Champions League," the club stated. Management also expressed deep gratitude to their supporters and local authorities for their continued backing throughout the appeal process. The technical crew faces reshuffling decisions as several key players remain away on national team duty.
