Edo Elite Super League Launched to Bridge Gap Between Grassroots and Professional Football

Posted : 07 June 2026

The organisers of the newly established Edo Elite Super League have unveiled plans for a transformative grassroots football competition aimed at creating sustainable career opportunities for young footballers across Edo State.

The league is scheduled to kick off on June 25, 2026, with eight teams competing in a round-robin format at the NIPOST Football Pitch every Thursday from 8:00 a.m.

Speaking during the unveiling, league representative and veteran football coach Aiwaguore Wilson explained that the competition was conceived to address long-standing challenges within grassroots football by placing greater emphasis on player development, education, and professional advancement.

According to Wilson, the Edo Elite Super League is designed to go beyond the traditional pursuit of trophies and league titles by providing a structured platform for discovering, nurturing, and promoting talented players in line with international best practices.

He noted that many young footballers spend years competing at the grassroots level without clear pathways to higher levels of the game, a situation the new league seeks to change.

“The objective is not just to organise football matches but to create opportunities for players and coaches to develop and benefit from the game,” Wilson said.

He revealed that the organisers are already working towards establishing partnerships with clubs in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) and the Nigeria National League (NNL), creating opportunities for outstanding performers to attend trials and showcase their abilities.

Wilson added that while opportunities abroad remain a possibility, the league’s primary focus is to ensure players have realistic and accessible pathways to professional football careers within Nigeria and beyond.

With its blend of competition, mentorship, and player exposure, the Edo Elite Super League is expected to set a new benchmark for grassroots football development in Edo State.

The initiative is also expected to strengthen the football ecosystem in the state by connecting talented players with clubs, scouts, and development programmes that can help advance their careers.
