Eddie Howe Steps Down as Newcastle United Head Coach After Five-Year Spell

Eddie Howe has resigned as Newcastle United head coach, bringing an end to a memorable five-year tenure at St James' Park. The 48-year-old announced his decision after a period of personal reflection, saying the time had come to step away, recharge and allow the club to move forward with a new direction.

Howe leaves after transforming Newcastle into regular contenders at the top end of English football. During his time in charge, he guided the Magpies to Champions League qualification on two occasions and ended the club's 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy by leading them to the Carabao Cup title in the 2024-25 season.

Despite those achievements, Newcastle endured a disappointing 2025-26 campaign, finishing 12th in the Premier League after losing 17 league matches. The club also exited the UEFA Champions League in the last 16, falling to Barcelona, and missed out on qualification for European competition next season.

In his farewell message, Howe described managing Newcastle as the greatest privilege of his career. He reflected on helping the club avoid relegation in his first season before overseeing its rapid rise to domestic silverware and European football, thanking supporters for creating unforgettable memories throughout his time on Tyneside.

The departure also sees Howe's trusted backroom staff leave the club, including assistants Jason Tindall, Graeme Jones, Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone, along with head of performance Dan Hodges. Howe's final match in charge was a 4-1 pre-season defeat to Bristol City.

Newcastle confirmed that the search for a successor is well advanced, with German coach Matthias Jaissle widely expected to take over. The managerial change comes during a turbulent summer in which the club has already lost several key players, including Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon, while captain Bruno Guimarães continues to attract strong transfer interest.

Chief executive David Hopkinson thanked Howe for his outstanding contribution, saying he and his coaching staff leave with the gratitude and respect of everyone connected to the club. Although disappointed by his departure, Newcastle believe Howe's achievements have secured his place among the most influential figures in the club's modern history.
