Eddie Howe Criticizes Chelsea's Sacking of Mauricio Pochettino as "Harsh"

Posted : 23 May 2024

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has criticized Chelsea's decision to sack Mauricio Pochettino, calling it "harsh" and a "sad" moment for the English Premier League. Pochettino was dismissed this week after just one year in charge, despite guiding Chelsea to a sixth-place finish and securing European football for next season, three points ahead of Newcastle in seventh.

Speaking in Melbourne after winning a post-season friendly against Pochettino's former club Tottenham, Howe expressed his surprise at the decision. He praised Pochettino as a "very, very good manager" who has achieved considerable success across different clubs and countries. Howe lamented the situation, emphasizing that it is unfortunate for the Premier League whenever a manager loses their job, especially when it seems undeserved given their strong performances.

Despite Pochettino leading Chelsea to Europe with a strong finish to the season, it was a challenging year for him, marked by several disappointing performances that drew boos from the fans. His team lost the League Cup final to a young Liverpool side and suffered an FA Cup semifinal defeat against Manchester City. Nonetheless, Howe believed Pochettino was doing "a really good job" and noted that Chelsea's late-season form was strong enough to edge out Newcastle for sixth place.

Pochettino is the third manager to be dismissed by Chelsea under the ownership of Todd Boehly's consortium, following Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter. Meanwhile, Newcastle will conclude their season with one more friendly against an A-League All Stars side on Friday, also in Melbourne. Some reports in England have suggested that Howe, who is highly regarded, could be a candidate for the now-vacant Chelsea job.
