Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe remains optimistic that his team will regain their attacking sharpness despite a slow start to the season following the departure of star striker Alexander Isak.
The 26-year-old Sweden international completed a record-breaking £125 million switch to Premier League champions Liverpool on transfer deadline day, ending weeks of speculation over his future. To fill the void, Newcastle secured Germany forward Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart for £69 million and signed DR Congo international Yoane Wissa from Brentford for £55 million.
Woltemade, 23, is gradually adjusting to the Premier League, while Wissa has yet to make his debut due to a knee injury. Howe admitted the circumstances have made the transition challenging but insisted his side will adapt.
“In an ideal world, you have a full pre-season to iron out any issues,” Howe said. “We’re in the position where we’ll have to build those partnerships as we play, and I have no problem with that—I’ve done it before.”
Despite keeping four clean sheets across six matches in all competitions, Newcastle have only managed to score four goals, with just one victory in the Premier League so far, leaving them 13th in the standings.
Woltemade scored on his debut in a 1-0 win over Wolves on September 13 but was unable to make an impact in Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Bournemouth. Howe, however, defended his new striker, stressing that comparisons with Isak would be unfair.
“Every player is unique and Nick is certainly that,” he said. “The foundation is solid, the team is strong, and we’re just missing that X factor. I believe it will come.”
Newcastle, who won last year’s League Cup to end a 56-year trophy drought, begin the defence of their crown on Wednesday with a third-round clash against League One side Bradford. Howe is expected to rotate his squad once again following the Champions League defeat to Barcelona and the goalless draw with Bournemouth.
