Ebola Outbreak Forces DR Congo To Play Final World Cup Friendly Behind Closed Doors

Posted : 08 June 2026

The Democratic Republic of Congo's final preparatory match ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place behind closed doors. The international friendly encounter against Chile is scheduled for Tuesday in the French city of Orléans; kick-off is set for 16:00 BST. The fixture was originally slated for southern Spain, but local authorities quickly canceled the event as a strict public health precaution.

This logistical disruption follows a severe Ebola virus outbreak in eastern DR Congo caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain. Medical agencies have confirmed that there is currently no approved vaccine for this specific variant; the World Health Organization estimates that clinical development could take several months. Consequently, international stakeholders have intensified travel scrutiny to minimize potential transmission during the global tournament.

To ensure strict compliance with tournament health protocols, the United States requires all tournament delegates traveling from the central African nation to remain outside the country for a minimum of 21 days while showing absolutely no symptoms before entering. Team officials clarified that none of the 26 selected squad members reside or play professionally within DR Congo. However, several coaching assistants and backroom staff members arrived from the country in recent weeks.

The Leopards are currently finalizing their tactical preparations in Marbella, Spain, following a 10-day training camp in Belgium. During their time in Europe, head coach Sébastien Desabre saw his side play out a competitive goalless draw against Denmark. The squad will transition to their official tournament camp in Houston, Texas, on Thursday to finalize their historic tournament build-up.

This campaign marks a monumental return for DR Congo, who last appeared at the global showcase 52 years ago in 1974 under the name Zaire. The African nation has been placed in Group K for the upcoming tournament. They will initiate their group campaign against Portugal on June 17 in Houston before traveling to Guadalajara, Mexico, to face Colombia, and concluding the first round against Uzbekistan in Atlanta.
