Eagles Step Up Preparations for Russia Friendly in Nizhny Novgorod

Posted : 05 October 2026

The Super Eagles have intensified preparations for Tuesday’s international friendly against Russia, with 17 players taking part in their opening training session in Nizhny Novgorod.

The session marked the beginning of Nigeria’s final build-up for the encounter at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium, with the players working on their fitness, tactical organisation, and team coordination.

Among those involved were 101-cap Moses Simon, goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, defenders Benjamin Fredricks and Emmanuel Fernandez, as well as forwards Kelechi Iheanacho and Akor Adams.

The Super Eagles are scheduled to hold two more training sessions on Sunday and Monday as the head coach and his technical crew fine-tune preparations for the meeting with the Russian national team.

The Nigerian delegation travelled to Russia on Turkish Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines flights, transiting through Istanbul and Addis Ababa, respectively, before arriving in Moscow and continuing their journey to Nizhny Novgorod.

Tuesday’s encounter will provide another opportunity for both teams to build on their previous meeting in Moscow last year.

Russia and Nigeria played out a 1-1 draw at the Luzhniki Stadium on June 6, 2025, with the hosts taking the lead through an own goal by Nigeria defender Semi Ajayi.

The Super Eagles responded through Tolu Arokodare, who restored parity to ensure the teams shared the spoils.

With another meeting now approaching, Nigeria will look to make the most of the friendly as preparations continue for the team’s forthcoming competitive engagements.
