Dreyer Brace Denies Messi as Inter Miami Draw 2-2 With San Diego

Lionel Messi scored his 101st goal for Inter Miami, but Anders Dreyer struck twice as San Diego FC held the defending MLS champions to a 2-2 draw on Sunday. The result extended Miami’s run to four consecutive league draws and left them 11 points behind Eastern Conference leaders Nashville.

San Diego made the brighter start and took the lead in the 12th minute. Jeppe Tverskov delivered a precise through ball for Dreyer, who lifted a composed finish over goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair to put the visitors ahead.

Miami responded 12 minutes later when Messi produced a trademark free-kick finish. His curling effort from the right side of the penalty area travelled through a crowded box and found the far corner, bringing him to 20 MLS goals for the season.

The hosts continued to apply pressure after the equalizer, with Messi, Luis Suárez and Rodrigo De Paul all involved in Miami's attacking moves. San Diego goalkeeper CJ dos Santos also made several important saves as Miami searched for a second goal.

Miami eventually moved in front in the 74th minute. De Paul threaded a pass into Suárez's path, allowing the Uruguayan striker to fire home and put the home side 2-1 ahead.

San Diego refused to surrender, however, and Dreyer completed his brace eight minutes later. Tverskov again provided the decisive pass over the Miami defense, with Dreyer calmly finishing to restore parity at 2-2.

The visitors nearly snatched all three points in stoppage time, but St. Clair denied Kieran Sargeant's late counter-attacking effort. Miami therefore settled for another draw and moved to 46 points from 26 matches, while remaining 11 points behind Nashville.

For San Diego, the result ended a three-match losing streak. The California side moved to 31 points and remained just outside the Western Conference playoff places.
