DR Congo World Cup preparations continue amid Ebola outbreak concerns

Posted : 20 May 2026

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s national football team is continuing preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite an ongoing Ebola outbreak in the country. The squad remains confident it will travel to North America for the tournament this summer, although adjustments have already been made to its training schedule.

FIFA confirmed it is closely monitoring the situation and is in constant communication with the Congo DR Football Association. The governing body stated that it is working alongside health and government authorities across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, as well as the World Health Organisation, to ensure the safety of all participants in the tournament.

As part of precautionary measures, DR Congo has cancelled a planned training camp in Kinshasa due to health restrictions linked to the outbreak. However, officials confirmed that the team’s European-based preparations and their training camp in Houston remain unchanged.

The squad is set to establish Houston as its base for the World Cup, with its opening Group K match scheduled against Portugal on June 17. They will also face Colombia in Mexico and Uzbekistan in Atlanta during the group stage.

Authorities in the United States have introduced temporary travel restrictions for individuals who have recently been in affected Ebola regions, including DR Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan. Despite this, officials involved in World Cup planning have said there are currently no changes to the team’s arrival schedule.

FIFA and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are continuing to coordinate closely to ensure safe travel arrangements and minimise any health risks for players, staff, and the public during the tournament build-up.
