DR Congo Defy the Odds to Reach World Cup Knockout Stage and Set Up England Clash

DR Congo's remarkable journey to the FIFA World Cup knockout stage has become one of the tournament's most inspiring stories. More than five decades after their only previous World Cup appearance, the Leopards have battled enormous challenges both on and off the pitch to earn a place in the last 16, where they will face England.

Their path to the tournament was anything but straightforward. DR Congo had to survive a grueling 13-match qualification campaign before overcoming additional obstacles, including a mandatory quarantine period ahead of the competition due to an Ebola outbreak. Those sporting difficulties came against the backdrop of decades of conflict in the country's eastern region, where violence has displaced countless families.

Newcastle United forward Yoane Wissa, who scored twice in the victory over Uzbekistan that secured DR Congo's first-ever World Cup win, said representing his country carries a meaning far beyond football. He explained that the players constantly think about those affected by the ongoing conflict and hope their performances can offer moments of pride and unity for the people back home.

Wissa added that the squad wants to inspire the nation and honor those who have endured years of hardship. He described the team's success as proof of how far they have come despite difficult circumstances, saying the players are determined to create a proud chapter in the country's football history.

The squad also reflects the Congolese diaspora that has spread across Europe over the years. Twenty of the 26 players were born outside DR Congo, with many raised in France after their families left in search of safety. Several members also have strong ties to English football.

Defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka, born in London, represented England at youth level before switching his international allegiance to DR Congo. Axel Tuanzebe also played for England's youth teams and could line up against former teammate Marcus Rashford when the two nations meet. Midfielder Noah Sadiki made a similar decision by leaving Belgium's youth setup to commit to DR Congo.

Sadiki believes a new generation of footballers is embracing the opportunity to reconnect with their heritage and contribute to the country's future. According to him, many young players now see representing DR Congo as a chance to give something back to the people and help elevate the national team on the global stage.

The nation's only previous World Cup appearance came in 1974, when it competed as Zaire. That tournament ended in disappointment, with the team suffering three defeats and conceding 14 goals. More than 50 years later, this new generation has rewritten that narrative by guiding the country into the knockout rounds for the first time.

Preparation for this year's tournament was also disrupted by an Ebola outbreak that claimed more than 300 lives. Health restrictions forced the squad into a 21-day isolation period in Belgium before they were permitted to travel to the United States. Even one of the team's most recognizable supporters, Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, was unable to attend after being denied entry.

Under French head coach Sebastien Desabre, however, DR Congo has consistently exceeded expectations. The Leopards eliminated African heavyweights Cameroon and Nigeria during qualification before defeating Jamaica in an intercontinental playoff to secure their place at the World Cup.

Their impressive campaign continued in the group stage with a hard-fought draw against Portugal, where Wissa scored the equalizer. After a narrow defeat to Colombia, DR Congo needed a victory over Uzbekistan to progress, and they delivered with a convincing 3-1 win inspired once again by Wissa's goals.

Now the Leopards face one of the tournament favorites in England. Yet after overcoming years of adversity, a demanding qualification process, and countless obstacles along the way, DR Congo enters the last 16 believing no challenge is beyond its reach.
