DR Congo Aim for Strong World Cup Start Against Portugal in Houston

Posted : 16 June 2026

DR Congo head coach Sébastien Desabre has called on his team to deliver a strong performance as they prepare to open their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against Portugal on Wednesday at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.

The Leopards are returning to the global stage for the first time since 1974, but their preparations were significantly disrupted by an Ebola outbreak in their home country. The situation forced the squad into a mandatory 21-day quarantine before they were allowed to travel to the United States.

Further complications saw the team relocate their training base from Kinshasa to Belgium at the end of May. There, they completed their final warm-up matches against Denmark and Chile, drawing 0-0 with the Danes and narrowly losing 2-1 to Chile. Despite the setbacks, Desabre praised his players for their ability to adapt under difficult circumstances.

DR Congo secured their place at the tournament via the playoffs, defeating Jamaica 1-0 after extra time in March to confirm their return to the World Cup, formerly as Zaire.

Portugal, meanwhile, arrive in strong form after losing just once in qualifying and finishing top of their group. Roberto Martínez’s side have also been impressive in international friendlies throughout 2026, remaining unbeaten across their preparations.

The Portuguese have featured in each of the last six World Cups, with their best finish coming in 2006 when they reached the semi-finals and placed fourth overall. Their squad enters the tournament with confidence after a series of convincing results, including wins over Chile, the United States, and Nigeria.

Desabre acknowledged the challenges his squad has faced but stressed the importance of focus and resilience. He said reaching the tournament was already a major achievement for the nation and urged his players to make the most of the opportunity on football’s biggest stage.

Attention will also be on key players from both sides. Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes enjoyed a standout season at club level, setting an assist record for Manchester United and contributing significantly in qualification. He also played a decisive role in Portugal’s recent international fixtures.

For DR Congo, striker Yoane Wissa remains a key figure despite recent injury setbacks. The forward played an important role in qualifying, contributing goals and assists, and will be hoping to regain full fitness to lead the attack in the tournament.
