Dortmund's Sancho shines on Champions League stage, inspires victory over PSG

Posted : 02 May 2024

Borussia Dortmund coach Edin Terzic praised winger Jadon Sancho's standout performance in their 1-0 Champions League semifinal first-leg triumph over Paris Saint-Germain, attributing it to the magnitude of the occasion.

Terzic highlighted that Sancho's brilliance in the match mirrored his consistent displays in training, although translating that into a match situation, especially after a period of limited game time, presented its challenges. Nonetheless, Terzic emphasized the importance of such performances from Sancho for Dortmund's success, acknowledging his undeniable quality and the impact it had on the team's victory.

Despite his impressive showing, Sancho remained grounded, recognizing that the tie was only at halftime and stressing the need for Dortmund to finish the job in the return leg at Paris. His focus remained on the collective effort required to secure a spot in the Champions League final at Wembley in June.

Throughout the match, Sancho showcased his attacking prowess, constantly posing a threat to PSG with his dribbling ability and creativity. His contribution nearly resulted in a goal late in the game when he provided an excellent opportunity for Julian Brandt, only to be denied by resilient defending from Marquinhos.

Reflecting on the electrifying atmosphere created by Dortmund's fervent supporters, Sancho acknowledged the significant role played by the 80,000-strong crowd in inspiring the team's performance. The passionate backing from the fans fueled their motivation and determination, evident from the outset of the match.

Looking ahead to the upcoming fixture at the Parc des Princes, Sancho expressed his desire to maintain his current form and contribute consistently to the team's success. Despite his challenging situation earlier in the season at Manchester United, where he had limited playing time and was subsequently loaned to Dortmund, Sancho remained focused on the present and committed to making the most of his opportunity with his current club. Any thoughts of a potential return to Manchester United were set aside as he remained fully focused on his current objectives.
