Donnarumma's Crucial Saves Propel PSG to Champions League Semifinals

Posted : 06 May 2025

Gianluigi Donnarumma's performances have been crucial in Paris Saint-Germain's impressive run in this season's Champions League, matching the attacking brilliance of players like Ousmane Dembele. Heading into their semifinal second leg against Arsenal at Parc des Princes, PSG holds a 1-0 advantage after Dembele's decisive goal in London.

While Dembele's tally of 33 goals this season has been the headline act, Donnarumma's crucial saves, including some high-quality stops against Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard, have kept PSG on track.

Despite an early scare when Donnarumma came off his line and was nearly punished by Arsenal’s goal, the Italian goalkeeper's shot-stopping abilities were vital in preventing further danger. His interventions were particularly important in PSG’s previous knockout rounds, especially against Liverpool and Aston Villa.

PSG captain Marquinhos recognized that a great goalkeeper is essential for a championship-winning team, underscoring Donnarumma's role in keeping the team composed during high-pressure moments.

Donnarumma’s importance became even clearer during PSG’s quarterfinal against Aston Villa, where his saves against Marcus Rashford and Youri Tielemans ensured the team held on to their lead despite a late Villa fightback.

Achraf Hakimi also backed the goalkeeper, stating that although many people doubt his ability, the squad knows Donnarumma’s quality. The 26-year-old's performance in a penalty shootout win over Liverpool also reinforced his reputation as a reliable figure under pressure.

Since joining PSG in 2021, Donnarumma, who was a hero for Italy during their Euro 2020 triumph, has had to contend with criticism and competition from Keylor Navas. While his shot-stopping has rarely been questioned, his ball distribution has raised concerns, leading to speculation about his future at the club. Donnarumma, however, hopes to remain at PSG and extend his contract beyond 2026, with the team’s immediate focus on securing a Champions League final spot.
