Done Deal: Coventry City Sign Super Eagles Striker Taiwo Awoniyi From Nottingham Forest

Posted : 18 August 2026

Premier League newcomers Coventry City have completed the permanent signing of Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest ahead of the 2026/27 season. The club confirmed the transfer on Monday through its official website.

The 29-year-old forward becomes another major addition to Coventry's squad as the club prepares for its return to the Premier League. Reports from ESPN had previously indicated that the transfer was worth around £17 million, although Coventry did not disclose the final fee in its official announcement.

Awoniyi spent the last four seasons with Nottingham Forest after joining the club in 2022. He scored 21 Premier League goals in 90 appearances and finished his Forest spell with 23 goals in 103 matches across all competitions.

The Nigerian forward initially made his mark in Germany with Union Berlin before earning a move to the Premier League. He scored 20 goals during the 2021/22 campaign, including four in the UEFA Europa Conference League, before completing his transfer to Forest.

Awoniyi will now join forces with fellow Super Eagles international Frank Onyeka at Coventry City. Onyeka also moved permanently to the newly promoted side from Brentford, giving the club two Nigerian internationals as it prepares for its first Premier League campaign.

The striker's arrival provides Coventry with additional experience and attacking strength for their top-flight challenge. His previous Premier League record gives manager Mark Robins another proven option in the final third.

Coventry's promotion has created significant expectations around the club ahead of the new season. The Sky Blues will need their new signings to make an immediate impact as they prepare to compete against established Premier League sides.

Awoniyi could make his Coventry debut when the club face Arsenal in their opening league fixture. The match would give the Nigerian striker an early opportunity to test himself against the reigning 2025/26 Premier League champions.

The move also represents a fresh start for Awoniyi after four seasons at the City Ground. He will now aim to regain his best goalscoring form and help Coventry establish themselves in the Premier League.
