Djurgarden are aiming to make history in the UEFA Conference League when they face Chelsea in Thursday’s semifinal, marking the first time in nearly four decades that a Swedish team has reached this stage in European competition.
Their remarkable journey has included a thrilling extra-time victory over Rapid Vienna in the quarterfinals, overturning a first-leg deficit to win 4-1 away. Coach Jani Honkavaara hailed the achievement as “unbelievable,” as his side now prepares for the biggest game in the club’s history against two-time European champions Chelsea.
Despite significant injuries to key players like Patric Aslund and Oskar Fallenius, and uncertainty surrounding goalkeeper Jacob Rinne due to illness, Djurgarden are determined to defy the odds.
The club has seen a remarkable resurgence in recent years, bouncing back from financial struggles and past relegations to become a serious force in Swedish football again. With a sold-out home crowd behind them at the 30,000-capacity 3Arena, there is a belief among the players and fans that they can challenge even a giant like Chelsea.
Djurgarden’s run to the semifinal has been fueled by both experienced and emerging talents, such as the returning Danielson and teenage standout Keita Kosugi. Their campaign began with a win over Luxembourg’s Progres Niederkorn and included victories over Vikingur Reykjavik and The New Saints.
If they manage to defeat Chelsea, Djurgarden will be one step away from becoming only the second Swedish club to lift a European trophy, with a final in Wroclaw against either Real Betis or Fiorentina on the horizon.
