Djoliba AC delivered their best performance of the tournament on Wednesday. The Malian champions beat Star Sport Academy 4-1 in Kankan. The result was the second match of matchday six at the West Africa Champion's Cup.
The game took place at the Stade M'Ballou Mady Glao Diakité. Djoliba AC started fast and never let up.
Kouassi Yembé opened the scoring inside two minutes. He added a second goal just two minutes later. His early brace gave Djoliba a commanding 2-0 lead before the game had barely begun.
Star Sport Academy responded through Larry Siemon. He scored in the 17th minute to reduce the deficit. The Sierra Leonean side pushed to get back into the match. But Djoliba controlled the rest of the half.
The second half belonged to Djoliba AC. Fabien Ange scored in the 55th minute. Ladji Sidibé added a fourth goal in the 63rd minute. The two goals sealed a comfortable win for the Malian side.
This was an important result for Djoliba AC. The club is the two-time defending champion of the WACC. They opened the tournament with a 2-0 win over FC Nzidane. They then lost 2-1 to Horoya AC on matchday four. Wednesday's win got their campaign back on track.
Djoliba AC finished the group phase with two wins and one loss. That record earned them six points from three matches.
Star Sport Academy had a difficult tournament overall. The club is playing its first ever WACC campaign. They lost their opening match 4-0 to hosts Karfamoriah FC. They bounced back with a 2-0 win over AS Real Bamako. Wednesday's heavy loss to Djoliba ended their group stage on a low note.
The WACC brings together nine clubs from Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, and Sierra Leone. The tournament serves as pre-season preparation for CAF club competitions. It runs from August 14 to August 22 in Kankan.
Djoliba AC will now wait to see who they face next. Their strong finish puts them in a good position heading into the closing days of the competition.
