Former Netherlands international Dirk Kuyt has been appointed interim manager of Fenerbahce following the resignation of Ismail Kartal, giving the former Liverpool striker an immediate challenge ahead of a Champions League meeting with his old club. The Turkish side confirmed that Kuyt will remain in charge until a permanent head coach is appointed.
The 46-year-old steps into the role after serving as Kartal’s assistant, with the managerial change coming in the aftermath of Fenerbahce’s 2-1 defeat against Istanbul rivals Galatasaray on Monday. The result intensified pressure on the club, which is currently fifth in the Turkish Super Lig, six points behind the leaders.
Kuyt’s first match as interim manager will be Saturday’s league fixture against Goztepe. He will then prepare his team for a high-profile Champions League encounter against Liverpool on Wednesday, November 4, at 17:45 GMT. The European fixture will bring him face to face with the club where he established himself as a popular figure during his playing career.
Kuyt spent six years at Liverpool between 2006 and 2012, making 285 appearances and scoring 71 goals. Renowned for his work rate, versatility and commitment, he became a favourite among supporters and helped the Reds win the League Cup in 2012. He also featured in the 2007 Champions League final against AC Milan, which Liverpool lost.
After leaving Anfield, the Dutchman joined Fenerbahce, where he played from 2012 to 2015. His time in Turkey brought further success, including a Super Lig title in the 2013-14 season. His previous experience with the club could prove valuable as he attempts to stabilise the team during a difficult period.
Kuyt returned to the Netherlands after his spell in Istanbul and later played for Feyenoord before retiring in 2017. He subsequently moved into coaching, taking charge of ADO Den Haag, Belgian side Beerschot and FC Dordrecht. He returned to Fenerbahce in June 2026 to join Kartal’s coaching staff, before being promoted following his former manager’s departure.
The appointment represents a significant opportunity for Kuyt to demonstrate his managerial ability at a club where he is already familiar with the culture and expectations. However, his immediate priority will be to improve Fenerbahce’s results and restore confidence among supporters.
The upcoming meeting with Liverpool adds another layer of interest to his first week in charge. While the English club will arrive as Kuyt’s former team, his focus will be on preparing Fenerbahce to compete for a valuable result in Europe.
With domestic pressure mounting and a demanding European fixture approaching, Kuyt faces a challenging introduction to his interim role. His performances in the coming matches could influence both Fenerbahce’s immediate fortunes and the club’s decision over who should become its permanent manager.
