Diogo Jota’s Widow Sends Emotional Letter to Scotland Captain Andy Robertson

Posted : 09 June 2026

Diogo Jota’s widow, Rute Cardoso, has written an emotional letter to Scotland captain Andy Robertson, telling him she believes the late Liverpool forward will remain with him in spirit as he leads his country at the World Cup.

Jota and Robertson developed a close friendship during their time together at Liverpool before Jota’s life was tragically cut short in a car accident last July at the age of 28. The two players had often spoken about their shared dream of playing at a World Cup, a moment both were ultimately denied.

Robertson, who recently left Liverpool to join Tottenham Hotspur, previously paid tribute to his former teammate after Scotland secured qualification for their first World Cup appearance since 1998. At the time, he reflected on how both he and Jota had missed out on previous tournaments with their respective national teams.

In her letter, published by FIFA alongside a video of Robertson reading it, Cardoso said she was deeply moved by his tribute to Jota and the bond they shared. She explained that hearing Robertson speak about her late husband made her feel as though Jota had never truly left the game he loved.

She added that Robertson would not be walking onto the pitch alone at the World Cup, saying Jota would be with him in spirit throughout the tournament. Cardoso thanked the Scotland captain for keeping her husband’s memory alive and for turning grief into something meaningful.

Robertson said the message would stay with him for a long time and confirmed that Jota’s memory would remain close to him throughout the competition. He described how the emotions connected to the tournament would naturally bring both joy and sadness as he remembers his former teammate.

The Scotland captain added that he will carry Jota with him onto the pitch, saying he will be playing not only for himself but also in honour of his friend.

Robertson will now aim to lead Scotland into the knockout stages for the first time in World Cup history. Scotland begin their campaign against Haiti on June 13 in Boston, before facing Morocco and Brazil in Group play.
