Didier Deschamps Eyes Fairytale Exit as France Prepare for 2026 World Cup

Posted : 29 May 2026

Didier Deschamps is preparing to bring an end to his long and highly successful spell as France manager after the 2026 World Cup in North America, with hopes of finishing his tenure on a historic high. After 14 years in charge, he will depart having already delivered one World Cup title and another final appearance, while leading one of the strongest squads in international football.

France national football team head into the tournament as the world’s top-ranked side and among the leading favourites to win the competition. They are aiming to reach a third consecutive World Cup final, having lifted the trophy in 2018 and narrowly lost on penalties to Argentina in the 2022 final.

Deschamps took charge in 2012 when French football was recovering from a turbulent period following the 2010 World Cup crisis. Since then, he has transformed Les Bleus into one of the most consistent and feared teams in the world game.

The 57-year-old recently named what is expected to be his final tournament squad, admitting the moment carries emotional weight while stressing that his focus remains fully on winning another World Cup before stepping away.

Speculation already surrounds his successor, with former France star Zinedine Zidane widely tipped to take over once Deschamps’ reign ends.

As a player, Deschamps enjoyed a glittering career, captaining France to World Cup glory in 1998 and winning Euro 2000, while also lifting the UEFA Champions League with Marseille and Juventus. His transition into coaching was equally successful, including leading Monaco to a Champions League final and guiding Marseille to a domestic league title.

His managerial journey with France has included major highs and painful near-misses. He led the team to the 2016 European Championship final, the 2018 World Cup triumph, and the 2022 final loss to Argentina, cementing his reputation as one of the most successful international coaches of his era.

France’s current generation features world-class talents such as Kylian Mbappe, who starred in the 2018 World Cup triumph and scored a hat-trick in the 2022 final, as well as Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise, giving the team significant attacking strength heading into the tournament.

Although Deschamps has often been criticised for pragmatic tactics, he has consistently delivered results. France also won the UEFA Nations League in 2021, further underlining their sustained success under his leadership.

Only West Germany and Brazil have previously reached three consecutive World Cup finals, a milestone France are now aiming to match. Should Deschamps guide them to victory in 2026, he would become only the second coach in history to win two World Cups.

As his final tournament approaches, Deschamps remains focused but open-minded about his future, insisting that his next steps will be decided after his France journey concludes.
