Dessers, Tella, Iwobi among ten players for Ghana, Mali friendlies

Posted : 19 March 2024

The Super Eagles camp in Morocco is now open for Nigeria's upcoming friendlies against Ghana and Mali in March.

Nigeria is set to face Ghana's Black Stars at the Grand Stade de Marrakech on March 22, marking their first encounter since Ghana narrowly defeated Nigeria in the playoffs for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Following that, on March 26, the Super Eagles will take on Mali's Eagles at the same venue in Morocco.

The Nigeria Football Federation has called up 27 players for these matches, with ten players already reporting to camp as of Tuesday, March 19.

Among the first arrivals are Cyriel Dessers from Glasgow Rangers, Nathan Tella from Bayer Leverkusen, Fisayo Bashiru from Hatayspor, and Jamilu Collins from Cardiff City.

These players were not part of the Nigerian squad that reached the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations last month.

Additionally, six players who were part of the AFCON silver medal-winning squad have joined the camp, including Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi from Fulham, Semi Ajayi from West Brom, Moses Simon from Nantes, and Bruno Onyemaechi from Boavista.

Stanley Nwabali, the standout goalkeeper from Chippa United in Cote d'Ivoire, has also made his way to Morocco for the camp.

However, three players invited for the Ghana and Mali fixtures will not participate in the camp in Morocco due to various reasons.

Napoli requested the absence of Victor Osimhen as he recuperates from a minor injury, while injuries have ruled out Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest and Gabriel Osho from Luton Town, who was earning his first international call-up.
