Derick Hall’s Journey from 1% Survival to Super Bowl Glory with Seahawks

Posted : 09 February 2026

Derick Hall isn’t just celebrating a Super Bowl championship—he’s celebrating life itself. Born four months premature in 2001 with only a 1% chance of survival, the 24-year-old Seattle Seahawks linebacker has defied the odds. Weighing less than three pounds at birth and placed on life support, his mother refused to give up on him, a decision that would shape Hall’s future.

On Sunday, Hall played a pivotal role in Seattle’s 29-13 victory over the New England Patriots, recording two sacks and anchoring a dominant defense. Standing at 6ft 3in (1.91m) and 18st 2lb (115.2kg), he embraced his mother on the field in Santa Clara, California, after the Seahawks secured their second Super Bowl title. “Everyone knows my story, what it took for me to get here, what it took for me just to be alive and have the chance,” Hall said. “I’m very blessed—kudos to Mom. That was a special moment after the game. She’s an unsung hero who never gave up.”

Hall reflected on his love for football and the impact it has had on his life and family. “I always love and respect playing this game, and I feel like I show that every single time I step on the field,” he added.

The Seahawks’ victory also marked significant milestones for other key players. Quarterback Sam Darnold, who had faced a challenging start to his NFL career, guided the offense despite an inconsistent performance. Having played for multiple teams, Darnold now claimed his first Super Bowl in his first season with Seattle. “My teammates and coaches believed in me from day one,” said Darnold. “Some people called me crazy for believing in myself, but my parents’ support allowed me to play with confidence.”

Wide receiver Cooper Kupp also celebrated his second Super Bowl win, having previously earned MVP honors with the Los Angeles Rams in 2022. He credited his wife for believing in their journey and guiding him through difficult moments. “Anna has believed that this is what we came to Seattle to do. It’s an unbelievable story. To be in this place—it’s hallowed ground,” Kupp said.

Seattle’s defensive coordinator Aden Durde made history as the first overseas coach to win a Super Bowl, after beginning his coaching career in British amateur football. Durde praised the team’s execution and shared a personal moment seeing his family watch the game remotely. “I’m very grateful. A lot of people sacrificed a lot for me to be sitting here, but you don’t see that,” he said.

From overcoming life-threatening odds to reaching the pinnacle of American football, Hall and the Seahawks’ journey highlights resilience, teamwork, and the unbreakable human spirit.
