Derby County in discussions for youth team signing of Nigerian striker from Tottenham
Posted : 28 April 2023
Derby County, an EFL League One club, has expressed strong interest in securing the services of Nigerian-born striker Justin Oguntolu from Tottenham Hotspur for their academy team in the upcoming season.
Although Oguntolu possesses undeniable qualities, Tottenham Hotspur has decided not to offer him a scholarship contract for the 2023-2024 season.
The youth team coaches at the North London club have cited concerns about his physicality in comparison to another prospect, Ellis Lehane, who has been granted a scholarship opportunity.
In light of Oguntolu's impressive performances during his trial period, Derby County's recruitment team has initiated talks with his representatives regarding the possibility of signing him on a scholarship deal.
During a recent U18 Premier League match against Leeds United, Oguntolu showcased his skills by coming off the bench to score a goal and provide an assist in Derby County's emphatic 6-2 victory.
Having previously been associated with Arsenal before joining Tottenham Hotspur, Oguntolu has drawn comparisons to Middlesbrough's prolific striker Chuba Akpom due to his ability to play a versatile role, combining elements of both a number 9 and a number 10.
Furthermore, Oguntolu possesses eligibility to represent three countries on the international stage: Nigeria, England, and the United States.
The United States Soccer Federation has engaged in constructive discussions with Oguntolu's camp regarding his international future, indicating positive developments in those talks.
