2025/2026 NWFL Match Day 1: Delta Queens Begin Title Defence with Win

Posted : 28 November 2025

Bayelsa Queens FC, the reigning 2024/2025 champions of the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL), launched their title defence in style with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Edo Queens FC, the 2022/2023 league winners, at the Samson Siasia Stadium.

The match was a fiercely contested South-South rivalry, delivering drama and excitement for the fans. Edo Queens struck first in the 23rd minute, with Adegbemile Rebecca heading in from a corner to beat Bayelsa goalkeeper Linda Jiwuakwu.

Bayelsa Queens responded before halftime, with Kindness Chinaza equalizing in the 44th minute to end the first half at 1-1.

The second half saw Bayelsa Queens quickly take the lead through Janet Akekoromowei, who executed a precise finish just a minute after the restart. Edo Queens showed resilience, and Nwachukwu Adanna found the back of the net in stoppage time (90+1 minutes) to level the score at 2-2, sparking tense moments before the goal was confirmed.

Bayelsa Queens captain Blessing Ilivieda restored the lead from the penalty spot in the 97th minute after an Edo Queens player handled the ball inside the 18-yard box, sealing a dramatic 3-2 win for the home side.

“It was a tough game as we expected, but I commend my girls for keeping their composure and playing according to plan,” said Bayelsa Queens coach Whyte Ogbonda.

“We have ambitious plans for this season, and we aim to execute them game by game. Today was not easy, but we are happy to start with a win,” Coach Ogbonda added.
